The Heart and Soul Free Clinic announced today that the clinic has expanded its hours and services as of January 1 and that the clinic will hold an Echocardiogram Clinic with IU Health on Saturday, March 26.
The clinic is now open on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. by appointment. To ensure a doctor or nurse practitioner will be available, appointments should be made by 5 p.m. the Tuesday evening prior to the clinic. If after 5 p.m. on a Tuesday evening, walk-in appointments may be available. Prospective patients should call for walk-in availability before coming to the clinic. Appointments may be made by calling 317-804-5782. Camp and sports physicals are also now available anytime the clinic is open to see patients for students in sixth through twelfth grades who are uninsured, underinsured or are Medicaid recipients.
An echocardiogram is a painless ultrasound of the heart that screens for abnormalities. On Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, the IU Health echocardiogram mobile unit will be onsite at the Heart and Soul Free Clinic to conduct echocardiograms on uninsured or underinsured individuals who would benefit most from this type of procedure. An echocardiogram can access the size and shape of the heart, if a wall or section of a heart muscle is weak and not working properly, if there are problems with the heart’s valves and how well the heart is working overall.
“This type of procedure usually costs thousands of dollars” said Dr. Barbara Haehner, Heart and Soul’s Medical Director. “Individuals who are uninsured or underinsured in most cases, would not be able to afford to get this type of testing done. Due to grant funding we received from the Legacy Fund Community Foundation, a CICF affiliate, and the Washington Township Trustee and through our partnership with IU Health, we are able to offer this very important procedure which could save lives.” The echocardiograms will be reviewed by a Heart and Soul physician.
Uninsured or underinsured individuals who believe they would benefit from an echocardiogram, should call the Heart and Soul Free Clinic beginning on Monday, Feb. 15 to schedule an echocardiogram appointment at (317) 804-5782. If the echocardiogram clinic is successful, the Heart and Soul Free Clinic plans to offer additional clinics in the future.
The Heart and Soul Free Clinic, Inc. is a 501c3 free health clinic for individuals in Hamilton County and the surrounding areas who are uninsured or underinsured. All services are provided without consideration of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, age, disability or sexual orientation.
